AWU Abuja branch re-elects Chekwas as president

Members of the Abuja branch of Atani Welfare Union, on July 26, gathered in their numbers at Atani Hall chambers of the ‘De Accord Center’, Jikwoyi, Abuja, their usual meeting venue provided by Dr. and Mrs. O.J. Nnanna.

The meeting was unique as it marked the end of the first three-year tenure of the Mazi Chekwas Albert Oti-led executive.

Well attended, the meeting was primarily for the election of new executives to pilot the affairs of the union for the three years.

In attendance were some members of leaders-of-thought of Atani Welfare Union, Abuja branch, including grand patron, Dr. & Mrs. O.J. Nnanna (Ugwu Aro); Elder Ike Onu (Patron, Ugwu Atani); Barr. Adindu Elekwa (Ugwu Atani) and Prof. and Mrs. Nwaka. Also in attendance were Mazi Emeka Oju Kanu (former president); Mrs. Nkem Ugbogu (former secretary); Mazi Oji Nwaka (former vice president); Elder C.G.N. Ojinta and Mazi Okoronkwo Orji (Ogwo) to mention but a few.

At exactly 5:30pm, the former executive was dissolved after a valedictory speech by the president. Following that, the grand patron, in consultation with other dignitaries, appointed one of the branch patrons in the person of Elder Ike Onu (Ugwu Atani) as the returning officer for the elections and Mrs. Gladys Oji Nwaka as secretary.

Over 64 members of the union were in attendance. Of this number, 94% of those present voted unanimously for Mazi Chekwas Albert Oti (Nwata Kwochaa Aka) and his executives for a second tenure in office. Others re-elected along with him included Mazi Chris Orji, Vice President; Ada Mazi Stella Okereke, Secretary; Elder Chima Ogbonnaya, Assistant Secretary; Deacon Emmanuel Nnaekpe, Financial Secretary; Mrs. Josephine Ogundu, Assistant Financial Secretary; Mazi Ndubuisi Sunday, Provost, while the following officers were elected to fill the vacant positions: Mrs. Chinyere Eke Okoro, Treasurer; Mazi Samuel Ifeanyi Inyama, P.R.O.

Oaths of allegiance and allegiance were administered on the elected officers by the legal adviser, Barr. Adindu Elekwa.

In his acceptance speech, Mazi Chekwas Oti who is also the 1st vice President General of Atani Welfare Union world-wide thanked all the members for their love and unalloyed support, and promised to work harder to take the union to the greater heights in his second term in office.
