The recent membership drive and enlargement campaign embarked upon by the Port Harcourt branch of the Isimkpu Progressive Union, IPU, Arochukwu, has been recording some remarkable successes, as more people now attend the meetings with regard by the call by the chairman, Obinna Onyemuwa, to Isimkpu sons and daughters resident in the town and its environs, to join the union and contribute to its growth and progress.

In this regard, the monthly meeting held in February, the first in the year, had recorded more membership as up to ten new members attended, including the spouses of the married ones. The meeting took place at No 15, Izeagwu Lane, Off Trans-Amadi Road, Rumuobiakani, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The chairman of the branch, Mazi Obinna Onyemuwa, in his welcome address, expressed delight that the dream of the branch in getting more members was being achieved, just as the secretary, Ogbonnaya Akoma, also expressed delight on the same issue, and welcomed the new members with warm éclat and joy. He called on all other Isimkpu sons, daughters and wives resident in Port Harcourt and Obigbo to join the union, as membership was now compulsory as enshrined in the national constitution of the union, that took effect from 1 January, 2016.

Meanwhile, the branch is to host the national executive council (NEC) meeting of Isimkpu Progressive Union in July. The NEC meeting-hosting was confirmed by the presidency of the union during last December (on 27) during the general meeting held at Isimkpu Hall, Arochukwu. Since the present regime came on board, the annual NEC meetings have been held at Enugu, Umuahia and Aba, with the next one slated to hold in Port Harcourt in July.

Meanwhile, the branch chairman, Obinna Onyemuwa, had assured the NEC members of a successful outing in the Garden City of Port Harcourt. In this regard, a committee has been set up for the event. The committee has the secretary of the branch, Ogbonnaya Akoma, as chairman while Obinna Onyemuwa himself, Mazi Ejikeme Okoronkwo, Dr Ndubuisi Okoronkwo, and Mazi (Engr) Maxwell Kanu are members.

In another development, the secretary-general of Isimkpu Progressive Union, Mazi Ogbonnaya Akoma, (a Justice of the Peace), has resigned his position. In a letter of resignation he had addressed to the president-general, Mazi Akoma gave no reason(s) for his action. However, an inside source indicated that his action was not unconnected with ‘the way things go in the union with regard to financial matters, disregard for the union’s constitutional provisions, and non- implementation of the union’s resolutions and decisions on issues, and other matters bothering on perceived discriminative tendencies against certain officers of the village union.’ The source disclosed to Aro News in confidence.
