November 11, 2017 was a special day in Obinkita; the day the village union – Obinkita Progressive Union (OPU) – elected its national officers.

The election had elicited unprecedented enthusiasm from Obinkita sons and daughters from far and near.

Delegates came from different branches of OPU for the election, which held in Obinkita Hall.

Proceedings got underway as soon as the erstwhile exco was dissolved.

The election was conducted by a four-member electoral panel headed by the President of Abia State Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Anyalewechi Onwuchekwa., who spelt out the rules.

Initially, given the effervescent mood and conduct of some supporters in the hall, it seemed that there will be confusion. However, Justice Onwuchekwa deployed his sagacity to douse the tension, and conduct the election under a peaceful atmosphere.

At the end of proceedings, the following national officers emerged:

Mazi Innocent Okoronkwo – President-General; Mazi Chibuikem Akpara, 1st Vice President-General; Mazi Emma Okoronkwo, 2nd Vice President-General; Barr Emenike Okoro, Secretary-General and Mazi Chima Okoro, Assistant Secretary General.

Others are Mazi Johnson Onwunaraugwu, Treasurer-General; Mazi Dennis Onyekwere, Financial Secretary-General; Mazi Okoronkwo Mmeze, Welfare Secretary General; and Elder Ik Nwankwo, Provost General.

They were promptly sworn-in by the Returning Officer.
