Nkemka: Painful exit of an icon

The death of Dr. Nkemka Osimiriatata Jombo-Ofo on the 3rd of June, 2020 no doubt was a shock to many who had associated with the medical doctor turned businessman over the years.

Born on May 19, 1950 in far away Kaduna, to the family of Mazi Joseph Jombo-Ofo of Atani village, Arochukwu, he was educated at St Michael   School, Kaduna, Government College, Umuaahia, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He also bagged a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science, another Post Graduate Diploma in Management, a Masters of Business Administration, an M.Sc in Public Relations and a PhD in Management.

Nkemka was Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Afroequip Nig Ltd, Chairman, Quarrytech Ltd, Principal Consultant, Jombo-Ofo and Co Ltd, Chairman, Hermes Juno Projects Ltd, Integrated Advanced Infrastructure Foundation and Commissioner representing the South East and the Organized Private Sector, Police Service Commission (PSC).

He was Chairman Enugu Zone, 10th FIFA World Youths Championship (Nigeria 99), Chairman, Enugu Chamber of Commerce, President, Institute of Management Consultants, Member Board of Directors, Pipeline and Products Marketing Company, (PPMC), Member, Board of Directors, University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital, President, South East Chambers of Commerce etc.

Osimiri was Fellow, Institute of Management Consultants, Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary International, Distinguished Alumni Award, University of Nigeria Medical School, Fellow, Institute of Sale Management of Nigeria, Institute of Independent Marketing of Nigeria etc.

Nkemka left to mourn him, his wife Justice Ifeoma Jombo-Ofo, children and a host of other relations.

GOING HOME:

The ancient kingdom of Arochukwu came alive on Thursday, the 6th of August 2020 as the motorcade conveying the remains of late Dr. Nkemka Osimiri Jombo-Ofo glided into the town. The motorcade comprising of over sixty exotic vehicles had a brief stopover at Ugwuakuma village at about 3.00pm where it was received with a seven gun salute sponsored by Mazi J.C Imuoh(Ikemba Aro).

 At Nkwunabo, the corpse was received by Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi, National Patron of Nzuko Aro and another seven gun salute was released. The convoy there after moved to Ukwu Ovo Aro where it was received with a seven gun salute by the Eze Aro representative Mazi Oji Kanu Oji, the Eze Ibom Isii, Mazi Kanu Okereke Kanu, the Eze Ezeagwu, Mazi Okorafor Uro and members of the Eze Ogo in Council.

Another seven gun salute was released in his honour at the Historic Arochukwu Civic centre after which the corpse stopped over at Ibom village (his maternal home) and onward to Atani village and then to Okoro- Okpong compound before moving to his residence at Baraki.

Friday the 7th of August 2020 witnessed a funeral service was conducted and led by the Bishop of Arochukwu/Ohafia Diocese, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev Johnson Onuoha at his Baraki residence.

Some dignitaries who attended the funeral include the Chief Whip of the Nigeria Senate, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, Former All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman, Sen. Victor Umeh, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, Dr. Alex Otti, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Chairman, House of Representatives on Public Affairs, Mazi Emma Kanu Ivi, Hon. Mike Ukoha, Hon. Chijioke, Hon. Chibuike Jonas, Sir Anicho Okoro, Secretary General of Nzuko Aro etc.
