Eke Ekpe 2022: How Amoba Village emerged winners

Amaikpe square, Arochukwu and its environs was agog on Thursday, September 22, 2022 as Umu Aro from all walks of life converged to celebrate the 2022 Eke Ekpe Arochukwu.

The event witnessed a massive turn out, such that security agents had a herculean time controlling the surging crowd. The organisers were surprised with the massive crowd considering that the event took place on a working day – Thursday.

The event, which was the first to be organised by the Sir Dozie Udensi-led Nzuko Arochukwu, lived up to its billing.

The Nkuii competition kicked off the event and at the end, Madam Charity Innocent from Asaga village emerged winner. Madam Helen Chijioke from Ugbo village took the second position, while Adali Okoronkwo, also from Asaga village, came third.

About 17 villages participated in Eke Ekpe while Obinkita village was absent, a situation Aro New learned was a consequence of its leadership crisis.

Each village was given ten minutes to perform and entertain the crowd, which included the Eze Aro in Council and other personalities.

Predictably, some politicians in Abia State used the opportunity to interact with the people. Some of those who graced the occasion included Prof. Uche Ikonne, the PDP governorship candidate; Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; Dr. Chima Anyaso, YPP deputy governorship candidate, and Hon. Mike Ukoha, among others.

In the end, Amoba village emerged winners of the event. They left no one in doubt with a scintillating delivery of a well rehearsed Ugbo Ani and fishing dance. Their performance got many up on their feet in appreciation of a great display.

Atani village emerged first runner up with their performance. Atani deployed two major dance performances. The judges had a difficult task deciding on who performed better between Amoba  and Atani. Amuvi village emerged the second runner up.

Ekete Nsi dance from Isimkpu village brought several youths to the dance square as they joined in the beats and rhythms of the music.

Event sponsors – MTN and Nigeria Breweries – did brisk business as many people trooped to their stands for one thing or the other.

The youths were not left out of the picture as the Ikeji Youth programme anchored by Obasi Genesis and his team recorded a successful turnout.

Eke Ekpe activities ended with a party at the residence of Dr. Azubike Okoro in Amuvi village.
