The death has occurred of Mrs. Ekemma Mgboro Chukwu at the age of 61. She was born on the 7th of July, 1958 in Lagos to Mazi M. N. O Onwukwe and Ada Mazi M.N Onwukwe of Bubi Lodge, Obinkita village, Arochukwu.
Due to the itinerancy of her father, Ekemma attended many primary schools in Enugu, Port Harcourt and Arochukwu. She continued her secondary school education at Aggrey Memorial Secondary School, Arochukwu.
A keen sports girl, she played handball and basketball. In her senior year, she was made the school’s Sports Prefect. In 1976, she finished her secondary school education and received her West African School Certificate (WASC).
After her secondary school education, she went on to attend the Women’s Teachers Training College, Afikpo in present day Ebonyi State. At this institution, she received her teachers certification. During the early years of her teaching career, she furthered her education at the Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH), Enugu where she received her Associateship certificate in Education in 1990. Not content, she enrolled at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in present day Enugu State. In 1999, she received her Bachelor of Science with second class upper in Guidance and Counseling.
Ekemma’s professional career commenced as a teacher at the Arochukwu Central Primary School, Obinkita, Arochukwu from 1975-1983. After her marriage she was transferred to Central School, Akegbe Ugwu, 1983-1987, Community Primary School, Akegbe Ugwu, 1987-1992, Amagu Primary School, Akegbe Ugwu, 1992-1997, in Enugu State. Following the Anambra State government policy of disengagement of non indigenes, she was transferred to the following schools, Eze Akuma Primary School, Arochukwu, 1999-2000, Lekwesi Community School, 2000-2007 and the Lopaukwu Community School, 2007-2012 and Uru Lopaukwu Primary School, 2012-2014, Umunneochi Abia State where she was the Headmistress. She retired as a Director, Ministry of Education Abia State in 2014.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Enugu and was equally a member of its Women’s Guild and Girls Brigade. Ekemma bagged the Kingdom Pillar Support Award of the Ozu Item Diocese of the Presbyterian Church in 2008.
She was Secretary and immediate past President, Nzuko Inyom Aro, Enugu branch, past Publicity Secretary and Ex Offio member, of Nzuko Inyom Aro, worldwide, member, Ezinneoma Social Club of Arochukwu and member, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
She is survived by her husband, Mazi Okorafor Chukwu (OC), children and relatives.
