The remains of the immediate past Transition Committee Chairman of Arochukwu Local Government Area, Engr. Maurice Onyekachi Okoro was laid to rest on Friday the 7th of February 2020 at his father’s compound in Atani village, Arochukwu amidst lamentation as tears flowed from the eyes of many mourners.
Onyekachi who slumped and died in Umuahia on the 9th of January, 2020 less than three weeks into his tenure as the LGA Chair, was born over fifty years ago to the family of Late Mazi Christopher Obasi Okoro Ajunwa and Madam Peace Okoro.
He was educated at All Saints Secondary School, Ehere, Aba, after which he proceeded to the Federal School of Arts and Science also in Aba for his advanced levels. Maurice later gained admission into the University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Port-Harcourt, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. He was later to obtain an M Sc in the same discipline on the verge of bagging his PhD before his untimely death.
At the University of Science and Technology, he was elected the President of the Students Union Government (SUG).
Maurice ventured into the murky waters of politics in 2003 and contested under the now defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) for a slot to represent Arochukwu LGA at the Abia State House of Assembly. Thereafter, he returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where at several times, he vied for the party’s ticket to represent Arochukwu in the same capacity. He wasn’t successful on several occasions he tried to win the party’s ticket, the most recent being in 2019.
Thus his appointment as TC Chairman was received by many as a welcome development for a man who had hitherto not reaped the dividends of politics.
He left to mourn him, his mother, wife, children, sisters and brother.
