The development of any democratic nation is largely influenced by the effectiveness of its governance and the commitment of its representatives. In Nigeria, where young people constitute over sixty percent of the population, the need for effective representation at the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly cannot be overemphasized. Lawmakers serve as the bridge between the government and the people, ensuring that policies and legislations reflect the aspirations of the citizens. Through quality representation at the National and State Houses of Assembly, communities experience growth and development, and the youth, as backbone of national progress are empowered to contribute meaningfully to nation building.
Good governance is the foundation upon which sustainable development is built. It refers to the processes and institutions through which public resources and affairs are managed in a manner that is transparent, accountable, participatory, and equitable. The United Nations identifies key principles of good governance to include participation, rule of law, transparency, responsiveness, consensus orientation, equity, effectiveness, and accountability. In the Nigerian context, good governance implies that public officials must act in the interest of the people they serve. When governance is good, it promotes social stability, economic growth, and human development. The youth benefit immensely from this, as it creates access to education, employment opportunities, and innovation.
Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency is composed of many communities with numerous potentials for infrastructural and human capital development, with youths serving as a catalyst for the realization of such noble goals. Since the advent of the nascent democracy in 1999, Arochukwu and other communities alike have witnessed significant improvement through effective representation at both National and State Assemblies. These include establishment of hospital/health centers, provision of roads infrastructure, light/solar, education, scholarship programs, sports, and youth and women empowerment amongst others. However, a more conscious effort targeted at youth development for veritable resource for sustainable community development should be encouraged. Representatives at the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly should be more intentional about youth mentorship programs and development, in other to provide good governance and dividends of democracy to the door steps of the common man.
The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) clearly sets out the duties and objectives of government. For example, Section 14(2)(b) provides “The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of the government” The provision underscores the fact that every level of government, including representatives at the National and States Houses of Assembly, must ensure that communities like Arochukwu feel the direct impact of government.
The Constitution places the wellbeing of the people at the heart of public service. In the same vein, section 16(1) mandates the State to harness national resources and promote a planned and balanced economic development. Section 17(3) emphasizes that the State shall direct its policy towards ensuring opportunities for all citizens without discrimination. The cumulative effect of those constitutional provisions places direct responsibility on elected officials, especially legislators, to make laws and to provide policies that advance the welfare and security of the people; this is also applicable to the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency. The National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly therefore plays a critical role in translating these constitutional ideas into reality through effective parliamentary representation and oversight.

To that extent our electorate are expected to have that at the back of their mind, as the basis for electing future leaders, whether at the federal or state level.
