Former chairman of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, has formally declared to contest the office of President in the next dispensation, on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

Berating the political elite for paying attention to wealth accumulation at the expense of the people they sought to serve, Ohuabunwa said the South east has been marginalized, adding that 2023 is the best opportunity for the zone to produce the next President.

Speaking in Abuja recently, Ohuabunwa decried the worsening socio-economic and political situation in the country.

The presidential hopeful, who said this presidency will bring cases of discrimination in appointments to an end, decried increasing actions against the unity of Nigeria.

Ohuabunwa’s driving force, according to him, is the need to produce a new Nigeria where injustice is ruled out, adding: “Many Nigerians have lost hope in the country because of the depressing economic challenges where 53% of the youths are unemployed (more than half of Nigeria’s employable youths) and nearly another 22% remain underemployed.”

“The country has also become the poverty capital of the world with nearly 70% of Nigerians classified as by the World Bank poor.”

On the chances of South east in 2023, Ohuabunwa said: “The truth is that the South east has been marginalized, so 2023 is the best opportunity for the zone to produce the President.

“We will also ensure that Nigeria becomes a nation where the federating units will be liberated from the shackles of oppression and suffocation from the centre, so they can compete, soar and prosper and provide maximum democracy dividends to their citizens.”

Political analysts see the technocrat as an asset to the PDP, coming with a large crowd of followers as members of his New Nigeria Group (NNG) in all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which they say is a boost to any political party.
