Road named after Alvan Ikoku

The road leading to Aggrey Memorial College, Arochukwu from Nkwunabo junction/Omenuko tower has been named after the founder of the college, Dr. Alvan Azinna Ikoku.

That road is now to be known as Dr Alvan Azinna Ikoku Road, Arochukwu. 

The naming was facilitated by the erstwhile Transition Committee Chairman of Arochukwu Local Government Area, Mazi Emmanuel Jideofor Kanu. 

Aggrey Memorial College, Arochukwu, was established in 1932 by Dr. Alvan Ikoku. The institution has trained several prominent Nigerians and Africans. It is named after a great Ghanian educationist, Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey.

Ikoku was born on August 1, 1900. He was educated at the Arochukwu Government Primary School and the Hope Wadell Training Institute, Calabar. He thereafter enrolled as a private candidate with the Wesley Hall Correspondence College, Oxford and passed the University of London degree examination in Philosophy in 1928.

He was President, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), founding member, University of Ibadan, which conferred on him, an honorary degree in law at its convocation ceremony in 1965. He was member, Eastern Nigeria House of Assembly etc.

Ikoku was the recipient of the Officer of the Federal Republic, Officer of the Noble Order of the British empire etc. The Federal Government of Nigeria immortalized him by naming the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri after him and having his portrait on the Ten Naira note.
