Constitution is defined as “ the rule book for a state. It sets out the fundamental principles by which the state is governed. It describes the main institutions of state, and defines the relationship between these institutions- the executive, legislature and judiciary “.

From my little understanding of this definition, a Constitution is the handbook of a people, a group, an association, etc.

It is the compass, that directs the path of a people, group, or associations. Most importantly, it is a leveller, as it protects the welfare of individuals under it.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, “ To deny people their rights is to challenge their very humanity “.

I remember when our  children were in Madona University.  One of the important documents given to every student at the point of registration was the “ School Handbook “. In that book contains all the do’s, and don’ts of the university . The process was very simple. If a student contravenes  any of the rules in the Handbook, such student will be invited  by the appropriate authority. The student also knows that he/ she must report with the School Handbook. If for example, the student left the school via a prohibited route, the student will be asked to open the Handbook, and read the punishment attached to that offense because, every offense has it’s punishment attached to it.  After reading, the student is required to apply the stipulated punishment to self. If it is an offense that attracts suspension, such student is required to leave the school premises without anyone reminding him/her again.

This simple analogy of Madona University rules infer that, every member of an association, or group should be conversant with the Constitution governing that group. That will be a guide to everyone knowing his / her limitations, as concerns the group. This is important because, it is said that, knowledge is power.

If everyone is conversant with the constitution , nobody will wake up one morning to trample on anyone’s rights.

For clarity of purpose, a Constitution is not a private document; neither do people wake  up to add whatever they want, to enable them achieve a purpose. There is a process called amendment, if things needed to be added, or removed because, it is a legal document. A constitution is not subject to command. That is why, it is not a respecter of persons . Rather, it is an objective document, not a subjective one; therefore, binding on all members under it.

Talking about the constitution of Nzuko Aro, which has remained a verifiable instrument of administration of this highly esteemed Nzuko, for many years; how many registered members of this Nzuko, knows what the Constitution says about their  rights as members ? I think it is time, to begin to create awareness in all the branches; on the need for members to study, and as well,  have copies of Nzuko Aro Constitution. Life they say, is a learning process. If people understand the Constitution, and know their limits, they will know that, what qualifies anyone to stand for election under Nzuko Aro  as a member is financial legibility; and not what anyone think about you.

On December 30th, 2022, Nzuko Aro Women’s Wing, will be having their general election. The place of the Constitution in this election, will be a litmus test to determine the strength of the legs, on which Nzuko Aro Worldwide is standing.

Long live Aro Okeigbo!

Merry Christmas & A Happy/ prosperous New Year .
